An open letter to Santa Claus

TO: MR. SANTA Claus From: Jim Prosser, Student, University of Virginia Mr. Claus, As millions of children petition you for the latest hot item of the holiday season, I'd like to take this time to ask for some gifts myself. While I'm sure that things like iPods and digital cameras top the list of many of my collegiate colleagues, I'd like to be selfless this season and ask for a few things, both tangible and intangible, for the broader University community rather than just for myself. With that said, here's my wish list of things I'd like for the University community this holiday and for the ensuing semester ahead, in no particular order:

Equality of fraternity

RECENTLY, I went to visit several broters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at their chapter's new house on Fontaine Avenue.

An education on the candidates

IF IT is the case that the issues and potential policy outcomes motivate the American electorate when deciding who to cast a ballot for, then college students, including those at the University, should be analyzing the policy promises of presidential candidates for federal support for students in higher education.

Woodward at war

WHEN Washington Post assistant managing editor Bob Woodward came to the University to speak last Thursday, I have to say I was in a bit of journalistic awe.

Traditional values, traditional dress

THIS WEEK, my father will fly out from my family's home in California for his first and, since I am graduating this year, probably his only trip to a University home football game. Game day in Charlottesville is a special experience.

A taxing debate

WITH THE Johns (Kerry and Edwards, that is) now all but united as the Democratic ticket, the two have formed a meticulously groomed chorus of sorts against the Bush administration's across-the-board tax cuts, advocating a repeal of the cuts for those earning more than $200,000 annually.
