Hospital's CoolGard allows for safer surgeries

Patients suffering from cardiac arrest or brain injury have a new chance at full recovery thanks to a machine recently made more widely available at the University Medical Center. The University Hospital is the only medical center in Central Virginia using the Alsius CoolGard 3000, a device that allows doctors to control a patient's body temperature to prevent possible further brain damage, said Mark Adams, a registered nurse in the coronary care unit. The hospital's four new CoolGards could mean the difference between suffering extensive brain damage and walking out of the hospital fully recovered, Adams said.

Eagleburger addresses 2008 elections

Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, who served under President George H.W. Bush, addressed the University's International Relations Organization Wednesday night, focusing on how he expects foreign affairs to impact the upcoming presidential election. According to IRO President Arjun Sharath, Eagleburger was able to weave his practical experience in the field of foreign affairs into his presentation, focusing on foreign affairs' effect on the upcoming election. Eagleburger "has a vast store of experience and knowledge," Sharath said.

NAE honors professor for life research

University Prof. John Hudson, the Wills Johnson Professor of Chemical Engineering, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering Friday in recognition of his work in the complexities in chemical and biological systems.
