Give me a ring

Cell phones seem to be a constant issue for many University students, whether it involves pacing around their rooms trying to get reception or walking down Rugby Road looking for the phone they misplaced the night before. Because Charlottesville is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, wireless reception in the area can be of very poor quality for many cellular subscribers.

Home for the Holidays

Most University students look forward toThanksgiving Break and eagerly anticipate a turkey dinner with their families.

Signing off

Several weeks ago, three Christian groups staged demonstrations at variouslocations on Grounds. The groups have sparked debate within the community regarding First Amendment rights and the University's policy on demonstrations. In the first incident, Michael Woroniecki, with his wife and six children, carried banners on South Lawn and shouted remarks such as "You're going to hell!" and "This flood, do you think that's a coincidence?" The group had been demonstrating for several hours before Dean of Students Penny Rue contacted University Police to moderate and relocate the protest after receiving complaints from passersby. Woroniecki is a fundamentalist preacher who opposes organized religion and is best known for his influence over Andrea Yates, the woman who drowned her five children in 2001.

New Dorms vs. Old Dorms

I realized the stigma of living on Alderman Road early in my first semester when a friend observed, "Oh -- you live in 'New Dorm.'" Au contraire, my confused friend.

Poking around

Despite the tough competition, the atmosphere of the poker tournament in the Student Activities Center on Saturday was a sharp contrast from most people's perception of a typical poker game on ESPN. There were no card sharks, no shaded glasses, no cigars and cocktails, just college students and a lot of Red Bull. This weekend, the Virginia Poker Association convened for its first annual Virginia Poker Championship, a two-day tournament of Texas Hold'Em.
