Honor seeks to increase awareness for elections

As this Honor Committee?s term winds down, Committee members have raised concerns about garnering enough interest in the upcoming Honor Committee elections.?Last year, we had a lag in filling spots,? Committee Chair Jess Huang said at Sunday?s meeting.Last spring, the Architecture, Education, Nursing and Medical schools entered the Committee with only one representative instead of the two allotted to each school other than the College, which is constitutionally provided five representatives.

Honor Committee, University Judiciary Committee pleased with progress

Both the Honor Committee and the University Judiciary Committee chairs are pleased with the progress their organizations have made this semester and are already looking ahead to the spring semester.UJC passed a bylaw this semester defining professionalism for its support officers and outlining specific violations of professionalism.?I think these professionalism standards are so important because it?s [now] transparent to our support officers what standards we do hold them to,? UJC Chair Merriam Mikhail said.Addressing a concern of UJC members and students alike, Mikhail said she believes the committee also was able to increase its transparency this year by releasing a variety of statistics at the beginning of the semester that showed exactly which standards of conduct had been most violated during the spring semester.

Honor, students debate single-sanction policy

In an effort to create a dialogue about the single sanction, students and Honor Committee members discussed some of the pros and cons of the policy during an open forum hosted by the Single Sanction Ad-hoc Committee last night.Sam Leven, member of the ad-hoc committee and president of Hoos Against Single Sanction, said the single sanction creates a black-and-white distinction between right and wrong.

Honor discusses support officer demographics

The Honor Committee presented demographics data about the Committee and its support officers at last night?s meeting.Committee Chair Jess Huang said this is the first year the Committee compiled demographics data, noting that she hopes the Committee will continue to gather data about demographics to track the relevance of the information throughout the years.?It?s extremely important to first assess what we have,? Huang said.About 92.5 percent of students involved with the honor system responded to the survey, with 224 of 242 students responding to the demographics survey.

Judiciary Committee passes new bylaw

The University Judiciary Committee?s representatives and judges passed a bylaw unanimously last night that further defines professionalism for UJC support officers.Passed by the Issues subcommittee, the bylaw outlines violations of professionalism and their consequences.?The proposal is to put into writing something that we?ve been talking about for a while,? Issues Chair Will Bane said.
